Avril Lavigne’s new album would have been a much tougher thing to piece together if not for her ex-husband Chad Kroeger.
The Canadian singer opened up to Stellar magazine about her rocky road back to the top. Lavigne’s battle with Lyme Disease put her career on the backburner and she thought her future as a musician may never again be realized.
“There was a time when my health was totally taken away from me, but now to be back — to make a whole entire record and shoot music videos and do photo shoots and start performing again — that makes me really happy,” she said. “I can’t believe how much I missed that. It’s who I am. When I went down, I thought, ‘Well, I guess I’m not going to work anymore, this is over.’”
Lavigne, 34, released lead single “Head Above Water” on Sept. 19 from her forthcoming album of the same name. The song and album making process may have been very different if not for the Nickelback frontman.
“I remember there was a point where Chad [Kroeger] was recording my vocals and he had to pull me aside because I was going to cry,” Lavigne recalled. “Whenever you cry in the studio, it is never a good thing for the vocal cords; they tighten up and it can completely change the tone.”
“He was like “No, no, no, don’t cry!” I stepped away from the mic, went to the bathroom, sat down on the floor and cleared my head,” she continued. “That might be why you can feel the emotion in the track.”
Just because they are exes does not mean Lavigne and Kroger do not have an important relationship: “Chad and I are really good friends. We have remained close and he supports me to this day. So it was really special to have him there and helping me.”
Head Above Water is scheduled to be released in February 2019 through BMG Record.
