HN Entertainment has confirmed that Oscar-winning director Guillermo del Toro’s (The Shape of Water) next film Nightmare Alley will shoot in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The thriller will reportedly star Oscar-winner Leonardo DiCaprio, who will be next seen in Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon A Time In Hollywood this July.
The film is based on the 1947 Fox movie that starred Tyrone Power as an ambitious young con-man who hooks up with a female psychiatrist who is even more corrupt than he is. At first, they enjoy success fleecing people with their mentalist act, but then she turns the table on him, out-manipulating the manipulator.
We’ve learned that production will begin on September 30th and is expected to wrap on January 28th.
Guillermo shot Pacific Rim, Crimson Peak, and The Shape of Water in Toronto using stage facilities such as Pinewood Toronto Studios and Cinespace Film Studios.
We previously revealed the production team would include cinematographer Dan Laustsen (John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum, The Shape of Water) and production designer Tamara Deverell (The Strain, Star Trek: Discovery).
Leonardo DiCaprio is also expected to lead Martin Scorsese’s next film Killers of The Flower Moon (was expected to shoot over the spring/summer), but the production start on that film could be delayed again because of the extensive post-production of Marty’s The Irishman for Netflix.
Fox Searchlight has yet to give Nightmare Alley an official release date, but given the production schedule, they could give it an awards-friendly fall/winter release next year.
