MEL – LEAD ROLE – FEMALE – 20-30 YRS OLD – INDIGENOUS / MOHAWK
38 LINES – 13 SCENES
Indigenous, Mohawk. Mel is a fighter, who is as stubborn as she is loyal. Mel struggles with abandonment issues from being taken into foster care against her will as a child. Because of this, she is possessive of Andie; their relationship means more than anything to her. She resents Andie’s desire to learn about Mohawk culture because it causes her pain to think about what she never had, having lost contact with all family through the millennial scoop. (Note: This role does include the lighting (and holding) of an herbal cigarette outdoors. The actor is not required to inhale unless they are comfortable. It will be an over-the-shoulder, close-up with a quick cut away).
ANDIE – LEAD ROLE – FEMALE – 20-30 YRS OLD – INDIGENOUS / MOHAWK
43 LINES – 10 SCENES
Indigenous, Mohawk. Andie is reserved and calm for her age. She struggles with abandonment issues from being taken into foster care against her will as a child, the same as Mel but she deals with her trauma in a different way. Having been diagnosed with cancer for a second time, Andie decides to begin learning about her culture before it’s too late as her disease has progressed beyond treatment. Andie has also chosen to have Isabelle assist her in her death, rather than let nature take its course, so that she may pass on before she is no longer in control of her body.
ISABELLE – PRINCIPAL ROLE – FEMALE – 50-80 YRS OLD – INDIGENOUS / MOHAWK
26 LINES – 6 SCENES
Indigenous, Mohawk. Isabelle is self assured, discerning and highly empathetic. She can at time speak bluntly, but it’s because she knows tough love is sometimes the best approach. Isabelle is a healer, working in a traditional way. She is also a registered nurse, and provides clients with assisted death should they desire that approach alongside cultural discovery. Isabelle believes in personal autonomy above all else and that healing can take place in one’s heart, though the body may still need to leave.
