JOHN WICK IS GETTING A FEMALE-LED SPIN-OFF WITH BALLERINA
Since its inception in 2014, the John Wick franchise has earned more than $581 million worldwide. For fans of the show, the figure is hardly shocking knowing just how intense an experience each film delivers. But the film was always an underdog action movie, coming out to relatively little fanfare and which was expected to fly under the radar. That each instalment seems to generate more acclaim for Keanu Reeves and his titular character is testament to the writing, cinematography and the universe created by director Chad Stahelski.
When John Wick 3 – Parabellum came out this year, it enjoyed such box office success that it became the highest grossing home entertainment title for Lionsgate in five years. It recruited stars like Halley berry and Ruby Rose and delivered stunts that went above and beyond what audiences expected. And if the action prowess of these female Hollywood legends was anything to go by, audiences will be in for a greater treat come the latest John Wick spinoff, Ballerina. READ MORE
FEMALE-LED JOHN WICK SPINOFF BALLERINA SETS LEN WISEMAN TO DIRECT
Filmmaker Len Wiseman is set to direct the female-led John Wick spinoff, Ballerina. In less than five years, John Wick has gone from being a Keanu Reeves assassin thriller with little buzz to one of the most widely-acclaimed and popular action movie franchises in Hollywood at the moment. This year’s John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum alone grossed $323 million at the box office on a $75 million budget, and John Wick 4 was green-lit less than a week after the movie opened. Now, Lionsgate is taking steps to expand the property even further.
In addition to The Continental TV show spinoff (which still appears to be moving forward at Starz), the studio is planning a female-led spinoff film titled Ballerina. Said movie will revolve around one of the young female assassins who was shown being trained as a ballerina by The Director (Angelica Huston) in a key sequence early on during Parabellum. The project is reported to be on the fast-track for development, and already has both a screenplay and director in place. READ MORE
BALLERINA, A FEMALE-LED JOHN WICK SPIN-OFF MOVIE, GETS DIRECTOR LEN WISEMAN
The John Wick universe is set to expand again with Deadline reporting that Len Wiseman will direct a “female-centric” spin-off film called Ballerina.
This marks the second spin-off from the Keanu Reeves-led franchise — the first being the Starz television series The Continental — and it’s on the fast track into production as Lionsgate looks to capitalize off of what a hot product John Wick has become. Shay Hatten, who wrote John Wick Chapter 3 – Parabellum, has penned the screenplay, which finds a young female assassin seeking revenge on the people who killed her family. This film has been in the works since about 2017 and was quite obviously set up through Anjelica Huston’s character in the third movie, whom we see viciously training a troupe of deadly dancers when John Wick goes to visit her.
