American internment camp survivor and sci-fi icon George Takei is coming back to Edmonton as the first-announced guest of 2019’s Edmonton Comic & Entertainment Expo.

The Los Angeles-born veteran actor who spent part of his childhood as a political prisoner in Arkansas during the Second World War went on to play Hikaru Sulu, longtime helmsmen of Star Trek’s starship Enterprise. This role would continue through the animated series, six Star Trek movies — eventually captaining his own ship — and even a flashback appearance on the increasingly beloved Star Trek: Voyager.

Openly gay, Takei is an outspoken political activist, with nearly 3 million Twitter followers.
