The Second City Directing Program is a focused study of directing improv and revue comedy. A small group (an average of six) are selected for this advanced program for students who are already interested in Second City-style shows and becoming a Second City director. The purpose of the program is to mentor potential directors in the skills and best practices of a professional Second City director

By the end of the program, participants can be expected to be familiar with the following:

  • Show Creation and Material Generation
  • The Second City RO
  • Keys to editing/revising
  • Theme development
  • The most common Second City Improv Set forms
  • The most common short form games used at SC
  • Customized Accelerated Writing Class (W1-W4 in 8 weeks)
  • Second City History and Archives
  • Working with archive scenes
  • Watching past and current SC Shows and projects
  • SC’s origins and evolution
  • Dissection and understanding of SC show types and projects
  • Directing Tools and Soft Skills
  • How to rehearse and put up a show
  • Time management and “running a room” best practices
  • Being a head writer/Editor
  • Giving Notes
  • Working with designers
  • Casting
  • Business of directing

Through labs and hands-on learning, participants will also:

  • Be considered for AD placements with Main Stage and Touring Companies, Writing 6, Conservatory Graduation shows
  • Be assigned a working SC director as a mentor for the duration of the program with semi-regular set check-ins and others as requested by participants
  • Watch archive shows with a post discussion and breakdown with special guests that were involved in the project when possible
  • Get experience directing actors and each other in lab/class
  • Direct a 25-minute archive show
  • Direct an original one-act (60 mins or less) sketch revue

Directing Program courses meet once-weekly. For the 2020 program, these will meet on Sundays from 3 – 6pm starting January 5th until June 14th.

Interested participants are required to apply for a spot in the program. The online application process includes submitting a resume, an essay, and optional portfolio materials (promotional materials, press, digital work samples, video work samples).

Tuition for the 2019-20 program is $2750. Scholarships and payment plans are available.
